The IRCNode network is unique blend of modern yet old school. Bringing together modern day services and servers with a touch of old school IRC Operators. Having opers (staff) that are educated and respect the irc scene whilst trying to keep it alive.

We know IRC has little to no place in the internet these days when comparing with social media and it’s peak in the early 2000’s which saw a combined userbase of nearly 1million user across all networks indexed and hidden, those figures have long gone and even the original top 5 networks are no longer as big as they were.

But that isn’t our focus to become the biggest with users and servers but to remain an experienced network and trying to keep IRC as good as it can ever be. One of the things that made IRC so popular in the 2000’s is everyone were getting new PC’s so they had old hardware they could experiment on with linux and fire up a IRCd, the dominant presence in the whois of being ‘IRC Operator’ gave significant power rushes to people and more often or not networks run on users home servers or a paid for shell would make significant use of /KILL, /GLINE, /SAJOIN, /SAPART and many more commands that modified IRCD’s gave, power really went to people’s head.

So are we a new network or an old network? Well we’re both. The founder of IRCNode brought the network over from a network that was once FlameIRC where it grew to a medium sized network (around 400+users at it’s peak), took on more servers for more users, promotion to some users who helped with the growth until one day it met it’s demise of linking in an inexperienced user who couldn’t even compile an eggdrop yet alone understand IRC Oper abuse on users wasn’t appealing took netadmin status of the network along side others… and then watch the network crumble to bits. We aim to never become that network scenario ever again.

We run QuakeNet’s snirc (ircu based) with Atheme IRC Services and whilst we have most modules enabled, we are a network that doesn’t use any IRCv3 capabilities. We’ll give the reason here. Look at what was said above…. IRC had it’s moment and is now slowly aging and becoming less appealing and used. If IRC was still at its 1Million combined userbase the features that IRCv3 offer would be advantageous for a lot of networks but why try and polish up something that looks good already and doesn’t need anymore enhancements. Look at it like this and this is how IRCNode sees thigs. You can take a 1920’s car, retro fit it out with a modern engine, interior and handling but under all that and the chasis of it, the car is still a 1920’s car and that is IRC, under and beyond the pointless ircv3 we got irc which works absolutely fine without ‘enhanced features’

Your stay on our network is important to us and we would like to become once again a network that can be trusted, friendly and welcoming to new and existing users. We promise our staff will not become the oper abusive network others once were. We provide you the tools (services) to maintain your nickname and channel registration so there should be simply no need for us to ever get involved with you or your stay here.
